Luigi Ghirri for Marazzi
The leading Italian tile company Marazzi has always seen photography as a tool to overturn preconceived ideas and over the years has worked with numerous artists. Ghirri and Marazzi first collaborated in 1975 when Ghirri ventured into the factory to shoot the company's ceramics. But unlike most commercial photographers, Ghirri became profoundly interested in his subject and interpreted it through his own poetics. So instead of being detached from the rest of his artistic output, Ghirri’s commissioned photography provides a synthesis of it.
The Project
Many of these works of art have remained for decades in the company’s archives and have never been published before. After extensive research in the company’s archives, we curated an image selection from their 10 years collaboration with Luigi Ghirri that subsequently evolved into a collector’s photography volume, a website and exhibition.

Art experienced digitally
While the book was printed in a limited number of copies, with curated texts by Francesco Zanot and Cosimo Bizzarri, the website was conceived as an informative and experiential digital tool equally functional for those who want to discover the project without owning the volume, and for those who, despite being in possession of the publication, wish to acquire a broader context.

Itinerant exhibition
The almost completely unseen collection of photographs by Luigi Ghirri was translated by the company into an itinerant exhibition curated by Ilaria Campioli, starting with Palazzo Ducale in Sassuolo, Italy and Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Paris, France.
