For the 2016 Salone del Mobile Studio Blanco has been invited to join “Doppia Firma" (“Double Signature” in English), a project by Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte, Living and Yoox.com meant to create a unique collection of sophisticated works, each the result of creative exchange between a designer and the practically unique expertise of an Italian craftsman. Among the designers taking part in the project Michele De Lucchi, Francesco Simeti, Giacomo Moor, Marco Zanuso, Matteo Cibic, Matteo Zorzenoni, Pietro Russo, Studiopepe and Ugo La Pietra.
We worked with the Tuscan master of scagliola Bianco Bianchi to create “Pinfold", a set of trays that can be put together to become sculptures, or used separately for carrying food and drink.
“We were thinking about ways to modernize the technique of scagliola, introducing it in contemporary contexts.
We chose to treate this magnificent craft in the same way as if we were using a Photoshop brush: we wanted to strip away its texture, using our hands to challenge the traits and multifaceted aspects that can be expressed digitally, to give it a new dimension. This was the starting point for the Pinfold series, founded on the tension that emerges when different techniques meet head-on, texture and virtual, using graphic design and old engravings that we dragged out, altered, acquired and re-applied, challenging Bianco Bianchi to reproduce something in the workshop by hand what the computer takes a few minutes to do today, but adding the magic of controlled imperfection. By using the art of scagliola, we took a minuscule aspect of our land and crystallized it in each piece: the flora, the water, the geometrical patterns of the floors in old buildings. The result is a series of enclosures containing miniature fantasy landscapes, sets of trays that can be put together to become sculptures or totems for display, or used separately as tools for carrying food and drink.”
